Nisshinbo Micro Devices Inc. announced the release of the NR1620 series LDO voltage regulator for use in consumer and industrial applications, which provides both industry-leading low quiescent current and low output voltage.
With the expansion of M2M and IoT markets, the improvement of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology is becoming increasingly important. A wireless sensor node, which is indispensable for WSN construction, must have the following characteristics: compact size, low power consumption for long-term battery operation, and high communication speed.
To meet these requirements, it is essential to reduce the voltage of the microcontroller core and various interface power supplies, and the power consumption of individual components mounted on the sensor nodes.
The newly released NR1620 series offers both an ultra-low quiescent current of 0.4 µA and a low output voltage of 0.4 V, both of which are industry-leading characteristics for 150mA LDO voltage regulators.
This product also has a built-in function that limits a startup current to a certain value to prevent an inrush current at startup. This function suppresses the inrush current and facilitates control when power supply inputs in the subsequent circuit have some limitations.
In addition to these features, this product achieves highly efficient regulation by driving the NMOS power transistors with a bias supply input pin (VBIAS) independent of a power supply input pin (VIN).
The VIN input voltage can range from 0.6 V to VBIAS, and the output voltage is available from 0.4 V to 1.2 V in 0.1 V step. It is also possible to select with or without the function of discharging a capacitance in the subsequent circuit when the product is turned off with an enable pin.
Two types of packages are available for this product: the DFN1212-6-GK (1.2 × 1.2 × 0.4 mm), which offers a good balance between the area and heat dissipation, and the SOT-23-5-DC* (2.9 × 2.8 × 1.1 mm) for general purposes, allowing you to select the optimal package for your application.
The NR1620 series is an ultra-low supply current LDO with a quiescent current of 0.4 µA.
This product is ideal for powering systems that require low power and long battery life, such as smartwatches, smart bands, and wearable healthcare devices, as well as devices powered by lithium-ion or coin cell batteries.
<NR1620 Quiescent Current>
The NR1620 series offers a low output voltage of 0.4 V and a low dropout voltage, contributing to lower system voltage and more efficient system operation.

In some applications, malfunctions may occur due to voltage slope limitations at start up or inrush current caused by large capacitance in the subsequent stage. The NR1620 series limits the inrush current at startup (IRUSH), which is the sum of the charge current (ICHG) to the output capacitor (COUT) and the load current (ILOAD), with the startup current limit (ILIMRISE, typ. 75 mA).
